SAFETY COMES FIRST !
Working at Heights is a high risk activity and a leading cause of death and serious injury in Australia. Under Workplace Health and Safety Guidelines AS/NZ 1891.4, working at heights legislation requires owners to have in date and registered working at heights equipment and components.
Periodic inspection of Fall Prevention Equipment is mandatory under Australian standards and state-based legislations. It is essential and a legal requirement that your height safety system is approved and accredited, and all roof anchors, static lines and personal protective equipment is in complete working order.
Statistics to consider
With 28% of fatalities in Australia being as the result of a fall from height in 2015, the safety of staff and people you employ to work at heights should be everyone’s priority. So we work to reduce numbers to zero. SafeWork Australia reports that between 1st January 2003 and 31st December 2015 that 359 workers were killed following a fall from height accounting for approximately 11% of all workers killed in this time period.
SafeWork Australia
SafeWork Australia has significant penalties for homes and businesses failing to look after workers attending your site and working at height. The workers you select all need to have in-date working at height safety certificates, equipment, and insurance. If they do not, report them immediately to SafeWork Australia on 13 10 50 and charge them for your wasted time!
How often to service height safety equipment?
Inspection regimes vary from state to state. Some states reference the AS/NZS 1891 requirement for 12 monthly inspections as a minimum. Most states have mandated more frequent six-monthly inspections due to the LFHQ (low frequency, high consequence) nature of anchors.
Anchor Points and safety static lines
Anchor points and static lines need to be inspected at regular intervals even if they are not in frequent use. In general, if anchor points and safety static lines aren’t routinely inspected and maintained, they can fail, and fixings can loosen, and rope fittings can dislodge. No one wants to face a coronial inquiry due to negligence. Especially pertinent for committee members of strata buildings who are often unaware of their responsibilities and accountabilities.
