The ring tail and common brush tail possums are a native tree dwelling species and only a licensed person can relocate these marsupials. Possums are protected under the National parks and wildlife act 1972. As such harming, killing or trapping possums without the license or permit carries significant and substantial fines and potential imprisonment.
Possums legally have to be released within 50 metres of the capture point of your structure, not around your property, within 24hours, and at either dusk.
As possums are territorial releasing outside of their area sadly often leads to their death. Sick or injured possums should be taken to a Vet or registered wildlife rescue group. Only after ensuring there are no possums or young within the building structure can access be secured.
